How many surveys do each of us get a year that we ignore? The Census is not just another survey. It is mandated in Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution and measures population in city, counties, and states. Counting everyone is important because Congressional districts are drawn based on population, and federal funding allocation is often based on these figures. Now Trump’s administration is looking to erase some by adding a citizenship question.
Research and expert statisticians have denounced this by stating that undocumented immigrants will not fill out the Census if asked about their citizenship thereby hurting states like California, Florida and other large Latina/o states by cutting funding and political power like Congressional seats.
